On returning from Niue I started the week feeling relaxed and motivated to start my second four-week build training cycle. That refreshed feeling soon disappeared as I did yet another set of night shifts. I am finding it increasingly difficult to adjust to the constant switching between day shifts and nightshifts which is not surprising as I seem to be doing nightshifts every other week at the moment!
I started the week off doing a tempo swim session – 3 x (5 x 100m @ target CSS pace). I was aiming for 1.19/100m and wasn’t too far off with all reps done at 1.19-1.21/100m. I struggled a bit towards the end but was quite pleased to make the times in the hot Moana-Nui-a-Kiwa pool before work. For my long run I did the same distance as 2 weeks ago (18.4km) but added in some tempo in the 2nd half (3km @ 5min/km pace).
At the weekend Chris kept me company in most of my sessions. The long ride on Saturday was somewhat eventful… within 3 minutes of leaving the house we both had a very close call with the car bonnet of an idiot driver who didn’t see us (/didn’t bother looking!) on the roundabout. The driving in this country can be pretty scary and I was pretty shaken up after the near-miss but carried on with Chris for a while and then rode solo to complete a 77km ride followed by a 3km brick run. On Sunday I had planned an easy 8km run; however, Chris had other ideas…. we drove down to the Hunua Ranges and did a rather hilly trail run. I must remember never to trust Chris when he tells me “only one more hill left”! It was a lovely place to run and great to spend some quality time with Chris while fitting in some decent training.
